Update on State Legislation: Who did Arnold side with? By Steve Kunysz
In an article I wrote a few months ago regarding the offshoring of jobs, I asked for your help in order to get Governor Arnold to sign four bills passed by our state legislature. The bills: AB 1829 by Assembly member Liu would assure that state taxpayer dollars will be used to create jobs in the United States. SB 1492 by Senator Dunn will allow patients to have control over their private medical records that are being offshored. Almost all medical transcriptions are done overseas. SB 888, also by Senator Dunn would guarantee that work essential to homeland security would be performed in the United States. AB 3021 by the Assembly Labor Committee will require businesses with over 250 employees to report the number of jobs they have in California, in other states and in other countries. None of these bills would have stopped offshoring, but would have at least given the Californian consumer a little more information to base their buying decisions on. On September 29, 2004, our governor vetoed all four of these bills. One of his reasons for doing so was that they were “job killer” bills. Giving consumers control over private medical records kills jobs? Reporting how many jobs a large business has in California and other places will kill California jobs? Our governor has shown us what is important to him: Big Business…anywhere, not jobs for the Working Families of California. Remember what bills he signs and vetoes, determine if he is working for you as a Californian, or is he just another politician catering to Big Business. Remember, then hold him accountable!
